Another One Down

Another One Down
Walk atop the earth and hear the pine-tops whistle
Bands of sand blown into the grey river ripple
Falcon sings the sweet bright note of dawn as it sizzles
Across the river, sounds of gunshots echo
One down, another one down
The fading flood recedes and remnants of a ghost town
Near every fallen tree an heirloom rusted like the dawn
Down under in a slave graveyard
Hear the righteous song of another bloody battle
One down, another one down
If you could only speak their tongue you’d see survival is simple
Black or white, left to die, to fight or foster evil
Everything you touch turns to dust
When you can’t get past the past and leave behind what isn’t real
One down, another one down

El Otro Lado
Last night I could smell their fires burning
After midnight their ashes fell down to the ground like snow
The wind ripped away any trace of a way home
The sun made us blind
So we lowered our eyes and covered our faces
Out in this ocean of unmarked graves
All we can do is pray
Darkness to Light!
Last night I swear I could smell the Rio Grande
But in the morning there was nothing but a sea of sun and sand
Out in this wasteland the line between dreams and reality fades
So I’m shifting my shape into a big black bird that will carry us away
In the cloak of darkness thank god you can’t see my face
Changing shape as we pray
Darkness to Light!
Por la luz de la luna illuminado el otro lado
Darkness to Light!
Come away with me tonight
Come away with me tonight
Yo te volare el rio en la luz de la luna
On a big black bird of prey
Eyes like a forest aflame
Yo te volare el rio en la luz de la luna

Fortitude
(for Beth)
Fortitude walks the silent sunbleached miles
Stretches its brown neck and leans in prayer
Brightly lit like Mary Magdalene
Deep in her cave in the howling wind
Admiration for old friends come and gone
No one knows how long she must have waited
Fortitude walks in the dark and tears me apart
At times like these I’m lucky I’m Clay
Molded by water, hardened by the fire
Let the water drip on down
Face my fears in the darkness
I want to see your golden hair undone
One more glimpse of golden hair undone
In the blue cloak of daybreak
You look just like Mary Magdalene
Deep in her cave in the howling wind

Tequila Sunrise
(a loose cover of CC Waterback by Merle Haggard & George Jones)
CC waterback – One tequila sunrise
One for my aching heart
The other for my bloodshot eyes
Last night they shot down my love
That’s why I’m feeling this way
CC waterback can’t stand the pain
One tequila sunrise to get him off my mind
One for my aching heart
The other for my bloodshot eyes
Last night they shot down my love
That’s why I’m feeling this way
They called him a wetback
And then they dug his grave
He tried to get away
Cross the other side
All he wanted was me
And to start a new life

Freewill
I live by the river in record-breaking cold
Some days in fear of hundred year floods
Prolly die by this river
Not far from here is a carpenter’s nightmare
Another victim of the storm
They get worse every year
A church of lost souls now left to the cold
The preacher grew old and the bell no longer tolls
Now it sits all alone in the cold
Like the dew in the morning on a sweet white rose
Only the crows remember the songs
That once poured out it’s welcoming doors
Freewill I believe in Freewill
I don’t know if I’m cut out for saving that life
In a race against time we all die trying
What once was will never be the same
But I’d like to see a positive change
Freewill I believe in Freewill

Long Slow Train
Never is now, and I’ve got a reason
These cold nights know a lot more about life than I do
I wish I had taken a lesson learned
The first time I knew that I’d get burned
Well it’s a long slow train
I’ve got some memories keep me up at night
They ain’t worth repeating
Keep me in search of the long white pine
Until I’m empty of all of my crimes
It’s a long slow train
And lord, thank god, it’s slipping away

Porcupine
Smoky Pine thin as a whip
Skin and hair white as snow
Took me into her bed
And before the sun rose I was dead
I don’t know what went wrong but she left me in the night
Gave me one last kiss goodbye and then she took my life
Cut me with her knife
Porcupine hidin in the bush
Black as night you can look but don’t touch
Took me into her den
Cut my face left me for dead
Some say that woman is like whiskey over ice
How could I know laying down with her I’d be laying down to die?
Oh my god.

Tennessee Smoke
The fires keep on burning long after the light dies
In the thunder and lightning in the dead of night
Come on to my place to the smell of white pine
Get lost in the mystery as the songs rise
Up to the night sky
Sometimes the night takes all of me
You remind me of the old days
Brown leather and Tennessee smoke
Get off the highway long after midnight
Go down those dirt roads to the place I call home
Down to that river to the smell of white pine
Get lost in the mystery as the songs rise
Up to the night sky
Sometimes the night takes all of me
You remind me of the old days
Brown leather and Tennessee smoke
The fires keep on burning long after midnight
And as the flames lick down come on down to me
Pass me that bottle and I’ll sing you a tune
Get lost in the whiskey as the songs rise
Up to the night sky
Sometimes the night takes all of me
You remind me of the old days
Brown leather and Tennessee smoke
